The reality is that, given your stance on the performances, cinematography, etc., nothing anyone here writes is really going to change how you "feel" the film (as much as you might wish it could), and that's totally okay. Despite the bone chilling feeling of watching these two come together, my interpretation of the movie has always been that Alma and Elisabet are simply the same person, with Alma breaking off into her own character as Elisabet refuses to speak out loud. Persona was also interesting, but I find the parallel in this regard between the two films, because as someone else said above:Īfter this comes the famous scene where Bergman takes half of Ullman's face and half of Andersson's and mashes them together to show a truly frightening image of one face. So this film was truly a mind-game, and it was very interesting throughout to unravel the mysteries. Teddy is actually the patient in question who he murdered for murdering his three daughters. Teddy has a conspiracy-laden insanity, and you've hospital staff team being part of the little ”test” if you want to call it that. Why I drew the comparison between the two films is because you've Teddy who is ”investigating” a psychiatric facility on Shutter Island after one of the patients goes missing, the patient in question being ”Rachel Solando,” incarcerated for drowning her three children, and also happens to be his actual wife.
